What Is Adoption?
Adoption is the legal process of transferring the rights and responsibilities of being a parent from a birth couple to an adoptive couple. The child becomes permanently and legally part of an adoptive family.
Adoption in Western Culture
The practice of adoption is very common in Europe and the United States. Many couples who cannot have children consider adoption as a way to build the family they long for.
The adoption process allows the birth mother to choose the adoptive couple and the environment she wants for her child. By selecting an Open or Semi-Open Adoption Plan, a birth mother can meet her chosen adoptive parents even before giving birth. If she does not want to be involved in the selection process, her adoption agency or specialist can choose the family for her, and she remains anonymous.
Adoption in Thailand
Often, in Thailand, a relative will adopt the child of an extended family member. But what can you do if you do not have a family member financially able to adopt your child? A Thai citizen can meet with a local social worker to sign the papers to terminate parental rights. The child either goes into foster care or an orphanage and eventually can be adopted.
